Review further prepares College for pandemics, safeguards from biorisks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Just as the coronavirus pandemic appeared, global biosafety and biorisk management experts were engaged in addressing new and highly-anticipated updates from the U.S. and World Health Organization (WHO).

With both factors in play and the ultimate goal of safeguarding the health and welfare of the campus community and guests, William Jewell College joined forces with MRIGlobal to review the College’s Emergency Operations. The College was seeking a partner to provide professional, independent analysis of its existing plan and to manage containment in the event of a positive COVID-19 case on campus.

Not only is MRIGlobal conveniently located to William Jewell College, MRIGlobal is internationally-known for comprehensive support for domestic and international laboratory biological safety and security services. This expertise includes monitoring COVID-19 recommendations and guidelines as they are issued.

The assessment will ensure preparedness for infectious disease situations (such as the current COVID-19 pandemic) and address other biorisks such as an incident involving biological agents. Special provisions will be included to address biological clean-up, especially regarding COVID-19, in case someone on campus becomes symptomatic or is diagnosed with the coronavirus.

“We welcome the opportunity to help our community neighbor, William Jewell,” said Lolly Gardiner, MRIGlobal Program Manager and Certified/Registered Biological Safety Professional (ABSA International). “Safety is our priority and our goal is to ensure William Jewell is prepared to safely address an emergency. We have been assisting colleges and universities all over the country with their biosafety programs for decades.”

Following plan completion and William Jewell approval, MRIGlobal will provide virtual training sessions to Jewell’s Emergency Management Team and other staff.
