by PREP-KC | Jul 17, 2019

This past summer, with leadership and resources from PREP-KC, seven high school students from Kansas City, KS Public Schools spent six weeks at the University of Kansas Medical Center engaged in paid laboratory internships in the School of Medicine. Students were placed in labs in following departments: Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Therapeutics; Pathology; Population Health; Anatomy and Cell Biology; and Molecular and Integrative Physiology. Some of these students have earned college credit in biotechnology, biomanufacturing, and cell and molecular biology in their high school program, Bio+.

Interns took part in a weekly professional development program learning about lab etiquette, scientific reading and writing, and a career panel representing scientists and physicians. Juan Tirado, an alumnus of JC Harmon high school and graduate of the University of St. Mary’s, spoke to students about his educational path. Juan participated in two summer lab internships through PREP-KC and will be a first-year graduate student in biology at the University of Oregon in the fall.

At the end of the internship, students presented their research projects and findings.  PREP-KC has been providing lab internship experiences in academia and industry for urban students since 2014.
