Merck appoints US head for food animal technical services

Justin Welsh has become executive director of food animal technical services for Merck Animal Health in the US. 

Dr Welsh will oversee the company's technical services and pharmacovigilance groups for ruminants, swine and poultry.

This appointment marks a promotion for Dr Welsh, as he previously worked in Merck's ruminant business unit as an associate director of technical services. In this role, he managed a team of veterinarians specializing in field research, anti-infectives, herd health and the application of technology in all phases of beef production.

Dr Welsh has over 25 years of experience in veterinary medicine and, before joining Merck in 2012, he was in rural private practice for 17 years. He owned a mixed animal veterinary practice in western Nebraska. According to Merck, he is an active member of industry associations such as the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, the Academy of Veterinary Consultants and the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr Welsh holds a bachelor's degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and earned his doctorate of veterinary medicine from Kansas State University.
